Welcome to the Meetings Course!
Hello and welcome! I’m very excited to introduce our new Business English Course which is all about meetings!
What we talk about when we talk about meetings?
There are a lot of conflicting views on meetings out there. For example, Thomas Sowell said ‘the least productive people are usually the ones who are most in favour of holding meetings.’
When Jason Fried has a more constructive opinion: ‘Meetings should be like salt – a spice sprinkled carefully to enhance a dish, not poured recklessly over every forkful. Too much salt destroys a dish. Too many meetings destroy morale and motivation.’
I am inclined to agree with Fried. We have to be careful with the number of meetings we have – we don’t want to hinder ourselves or fatigue our colleagues. In fact, it might shock you to hear that 11 million meetings are held around the world each day.
Meetings can be overwhelming. The Harvard Business Review stated in their article ‘Stop the Meeting Madness’ that one employee couldn’t ‘get their head above water to breathe during the meeting’ – a phrase that means they felt like they were drowning in a sea of other voices.
There simply was no space for them to communicate and express themselves. There is nothing worse than not being prepared for a meeting. So, when you’re sitting around a crowded table at work, both listening and deciding what to say, remember that there are so many others in the same position.
What you will learn?
That’s why we created the Meetings Course so you can build your confidence before stepping into your next meeting. The Meetings Course is an online business English language course. I want you to take away three things – how to make yourself heard, how to be active and how to be prepared in meetings. You will learn this through a variety of ways – including business vocabulary, grammar structures, phrasal verbs and TED Talks.
You will learn all the important things: how to communicate effectively, how to agree and disagree, how to give and ask for opinions, how to interrupt someone and, above all, how to get your point across. There is nothing worse than leaving a meeting feeling like you haven’t said or asked everything you wanted. No longer.
