About the book

During the month of March, we’ll be reading “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie“, a novel written by Scottish author Muriel Spark

The story is set in 1930s Edinburgh and follows the unconventional yet charismatic schoolteacher Jean Brodie, who teaches at the Marcia Blaine School for Girls. Miss Brodie’s unorthodox teaching methods and her particular attention to a select group of her pupils make her an intriguing figure, but her influence on her students soon proves to be controversial and even dangerous.

The novel explores themes of power, loyalty, love, and betrayal as it delves into the lives of the girls under Miss Brodie’s tutelage, and the ways in which they are shaped by her influence.

First published in 1961,”The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” is widely regarded as one of Muriel Spark’s most important works and has been adapted for stage, screen, and radio. Spark’s writing style is characterized by its wit, irony, and sharp observations of human behaviour, and her portrayal of Miss Brodie is both complex and compelling. It continues to captivate readers with its exploration of the fascinating character of Miss Brodie and the impact she has on the young women in her charge. Trust me when I say that this is one lesson that you won’t want to miss.

Interview with Alyssa Ordu

Hello, and welcome to the Intrepid English podcast. My name is Lorraine, and today, I have a conversation for you. My friend Alyssa is a Diversity and Inclusion Consultant in London. And when I told Alyssa that we were creating a diversity and inclusion course, in the intrepid English Academy, we had a lovely conversation about why diversity and inclusion are so important. I asked her to join me on this podcast as an expert in this field, to break down these big topics so that our English learners and the listeners of this podcast can understand a little bit about what diversity and inclusion are, why they’re so important, and give you a little bit of language that you can use to increase your awareness and broaden your horizons in these essential areas.
